The City
Edinburgh, Scotland:
Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. It has mild Autumn at the end of September making it the perfect not so hot and not so cold temperature to take a stroll in the city. The Scottish capital is a centre of culture and the arts and is especially well-known for its festivals. Edinburgh may seem at times to be two separate cities, so different are the 18th-century New Town's elegant Georgian neighbourhoods of stately terraces from the Old Town's narrow winding lanes, steep staircases, and hidden passageways.
While many of the most popular tourist attractions are along the Royal Mile, which follows the crest of the hill between the castle and Holyrood Palace and Princes Street, be sure to explore the other side of the hill, where you'll find the picturesque Grassmarket. Being one of Edinburgh's most famous market squares since the Middle Ages, it rings with history. In this pedestrian-friendly area of shops and cafés look for the White Hart Inn, where Robbie Burns once wrote poetry.
For 2 days in September, the people gather to celebrate the Edinburgh Mela - A vibrant celebration of Edinburgh's diverse cultures. Edinburgh Mela turns Leith Links into a colourful party in September. Music, art and dance from around the world feature on 3 live stages, showcasing everything from Indian R&B to African blues. Past shows have included Bollywood dances, Chinese martial arts performances, outdoor theatre and flamenco fusion. The Global Food Village has a mouth-watering selection of international snacks, from spicy samosa to sweet jalebi. There are also stalls selling a cosmopolitan range of clothing, jewellery and handmade carvings. Take the kids to Mela Kidzone, where they can enjoy craft workshops, hands-on activities and trampolines.
